What is a Familiar — and Could Your Pet Be One?

This is Mrs Snuggles. She has a habit of sitting directly on my altar, knocking over my crystals and staring at me with those enormous eyes while I work. For a long time I thought she was just being a cat. Now I'm not so sure.
If you have a pet who seems inexplicably drawn to your spiritual practice — who sits with you during rituals, gravitates toward your crystals or seems to sense energy shifts before you do — you might be wondering the same thing. Could they be your familiar?
What is a Familiar?
The concept of the familiar has existed across many cultures for thousands of years. In European folk magic and witchcraft tradition, a familiar is a spiritual companion — an animal whose soul is deeply connected to yours, who assists you in your magical and spiritual work and acts as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds.
Historically familiars were often depicted as cats, ravens, toads or hares — animals associated with liminality, magic and the unseen. In modern witchcraft the concept has evolved — a familiar is simply any animal companion with whom you share a deep, inexplicable spiritual bond. They don't have to be exotic or unusual. They can be your cat, your dog, your rabbit. The bond is what matters, not the species.
The Difference Between a Pet and a Familiar
All familiars are beloved pets, but not all pets are familiars. The difference lies in the nature of the connection. A familiar feels less like an animal you own and more like a soul who chose to be with you. There is a quality of recognition to the relationship — as if you have known each other before, in other lifetimes or other forms.
Many people describe their familiar as a presence rather than just a pet — an animal who seems to understand them on a level that goes beyond normal animal intelligence, who appears exactly when needed, who responds to energy and emotion in ways that feel almost impossibly perceptive.
Signs Your Pet Might Be Your Familiar
THEY ARE DRAWN TO YOUR SPIRITUAL PRACTICE
Does your pet gravitate toward your altar, your crystals or your ritual space? Do they sit with you during meditation or appear when you're doing energy work? Mrs Snuggles has an uncanny ability to appear the moment I light a candle or pick up a crystal — coincidence, or something more? A familiar is instinctively drawn to the energy of spiritual practice.
THEY SEEM TO SENSE ENERGY
Familiars are often highly sensitive to energetic shifts — they may react to spaces that feel heavy or uncomfortable, become unsettled before something significant happens or calm down dramatically during cleansing rituals. Animals are naturally more attuned to subtle energy than humans, but a familiar takes this to another level.
THE CONNECTION FELT IMMEDIATE AND UNEXPLAINED
Many people describe meeting their familiar as a feeling of instant recognition — a sense of "there you are" rather than "hello." If you felt an inexplicable pull toward a specific animal, or if they chose you in a way that felt fated, this is worth paying attention to.

How to Work With Your Familiar
ACKNOWLEDGE THE BOND
The first step is simply recognising and honouring the connection. Speak to your familiar as the spiritual companion they are. Thank them for their presence in your practice. Intention matters — the more consciously you cultivate the relationship, the deeper it becomes.
INVITE THEM INTO YOUR PRACTICE
If your familiar gravitates toward your altar or ritual space, welcome them. Their presence raises the energetic vibration of your practice and their instinctive sensitivity to energy can act as a guide — watch how they respond to different crystals, spaces or intentions.
PLACE CRYSTALS IN THEIR SPACE
Certain crystals are associated with animal energy and the familiar bond — clear quartz to amplify your connection, black tourmaline to strengthen their protective role, and malachite for transformation and spiritual guardianship. Place these near where they sleep or spend time.
TRUST THEIR INSTINCTS
If your familiar seems uncomfortable in a space, pay attention. If they react to a person, a place or an energy in a way that feels significant, don't dismiss it. Familiars often perceive what we cannot.
A Note on Mrs Snuggles
Whether she is truly my familiar or simply a very nosy cat with excellent taste in altar placement, Mrs Snuggles brings something to my practice that I can't quite explain. She shows up. She sits in the energy. She stares at things I cannot see with those enormous green eyes, and somehow the whole space feels more alive for it.
Maybe that's magic. Maybe that's just cats. Honestly, I think it might be both. ✦
