MOON MAGIC

Moon Rituals — How to Work With Every Phase of the Lunar Cycle

September 2026 · Star's Crystals

The moon has been a source of magic, mystery and meaning for as long as humans have existed. Every ancient culture on earth tracked it, revered it, built calendars and rituals around it. And there is a reason for that — the moon governs the tides, affects plant growth, influences animal behaviour and, for many of us, moves powerfully through our emotional and energetic experience of life.

Working with the lunar cycle is one of the simplest and most profound things you can add to your spiritual practice. You don't need to do everything at once. Even noticing where the moon is, and aligning one intention or one small ritual with its phase, begins to build a relationship with one of the oldest forces available to us.

The moon doesn't rush. She moves through her cycle with absolute consistency, asking nothing of us except that we pay attention. ✦

The New Moon — Set Your Intentions

The new moon is the beginning of the lunar cycle — when the moon is dark in the sky and invisible to the naked eye. This is the time for new beginnings, planting seeds, setting intentions and calling in what you want to grow. The energy is quiet, inward and fertile.

New moon ritual: In a quiet space by candlelight, write down what you want to call into your life in the coming cycle. Be specific and positive — state what you want, not what you don't want. Hold a crystal aligned with your intention (rose quartz for love, citrine for abundance, amethyst for clarity) and speak your intentions aloud. Then let go — plant the seed and trust the process.

Best crystals: Moonstone, labradorite, clear quartz, black tourmaline (for clearing space for the new).

The Waxing Moon — Take Action

As the moon grows from new to full, her energy builds. This is the time for action, growth, momentum and forward movement. Whatever you set at the new moon — now you work for it. Start the project. Send the message. Make the call. The energy supports building, expanding and drawing things toward you.

Waxing moon ritual: Light a green or gold candle. Write a list of three concrete steps you will take toward your intention this week. Read them aloud and commit. The waxing moon rewards action.

Best crystals: Citrine, carnelian, tiger's eye, green aventurine.

The Full Moon — Charge, Celebrate and Release

The full moon is the peak of the lunar cycle — full light, full power, maximum energy. This is the most well-known moon phase for ritual work, and for good reason. The full moon amplifies everything: emotion, intuition, magic, creativity and also tension. It is simultaneously the best time for charging crystals and tools, and for releasing what no longer serves you.

Full moon ritual: Place your crystals, oracle cards, water and any tools you use in moonlight to charge overnight. Then sit with a candle and write down what you are releasing — what from the past cycle no longer serves you. Burn the list safely, or tear it up and bury it. Speak the release aloud: "I release this. I am free."

Best crystals: Any crystal benefits from full moon charging. Selenite, moonstone, labradorite, amethyst and clear quartz are particularly powerful under the full moon.

The Waning Moon — Rest, Reflect and Let Go

As the moon moves from full back toward dark, the energy shifts inward. This is the time for rest, reflection, banishing and releasing. Things begun under the waning moon tend to decrease — which makes it perfect for releasing bad habits, ending situations that aren't working, clearing clutter and shadow work.

Waning moon ritual: A salt bath under the waning moon is deeply cleansing. Add sea salt or Himalayan salt to your bath with a few drops of essential oil, light a candle, and consciously release what you want to let go of as you soak. Imagine it draining away with the water.

Best crystals: Black obsidian, smoky quartz, black tourmaline, apache tears.

The Dark Moon — Rest and Restore

The dark moon is the 1–3 days before the new moon when the moon is completely absent from the sky. This is the most misunderstood phase — often feared or ignored — but it is sacred. The dark moon is a time of deep rest, introspection and completion. It is not the time for new beginnings or big action. It is the time to stop, be still and integrate everything the cycle has brought.

Dark moon ritual: No ritual at all is a perfect dark moon practice. Simply rest. Journal. Sleep. Sit in silence. Let the cup empty before it refills.

Best crystals: Selenite, black moonstone, amethyst, lepidolite.

Moon Water

One of the simplest and most beautiful lunar practices is making moon water. Place a glass jar or bowl of clean water outside or on a windowsill under moonlight — full moon water is the most potent, but water charged under any phase carries that moon's energy. Use it to cleanse crystals, anoint candles, add to a ritual bath or drink mindfully with intention.

The lunar cycle repeats every 29.5 days. That's twelve or thirteen full opportunities every year to set intentions, take action, celebrate and release. Working with the moon doesn't have to be elaborate — even lighting a candle and writing one sentence of intention at each new moon is a practice that builds meaning over time. ✦
