RITUALS
Bonfire Night, on 5 November, is a night of flames, sparks and fireworks. It's also a natural moment for a release ritual. As autumn deepens into winter, it can feel good to let go of what you no longer need before the darker months begin.
A release ritual is a simple way to mark letting go of something, such as a worry, a habit, an old grudge or a difficult chapter. Writing it down and watching it burn gives the feeling of closure a physical shape. It's a personal practice and a mindful pause, not a substitute for support if you're struggling. If you're having a hard time, please speak to someone you trust or your GP.
Do this outdoors, or indoors next to an open window. Use a hard, non-flammable surface and keep curtains, paper and anything flammable well away.
Take a few slow breaths and hold your crystal. If you'd like to clear it first, our guide to cleansing crystals will help.
Write a few words on the paper. For example: "worry about money", "the argument I keep replaying" or "feeling I'm not doing enough". Keep it short and honest.
Light the candle and take a moment to settle. A warm, spicy scent suits the night. Our guide to getting the most from your candle has tips for a clean, even burn.
Hold the paper by a corner, light it from the candle flame and drop it straight into your heatproof bowl. Let it burn out completely. Keep the water nearby, just in case.
As it burns, say quietly or in your head, "I let this go." There's no right wording. Let the ashes cool fully.
Hold your crystal, breathe slowly and notice how you feel. Then tidy up, put the candle out safely and enjoy your warm drink.
